Ant extermination in Vaughan is mostly about pavement ants nesting under driveways, porch slabs, and interlock patios, plus odorous house ants in kitchens and carpenter ants on the treed lots. A standard ant treatment costs $150 to $300; carpenter ants run $250 to $500 because the nest is inside wood. The fix is bait the workers carry back to the queen, along with treatment of the nest and entry points, not a spray on the trail. Book a free inspection, same-day in most of the city. Our ant control in York Region guide covers every species in depth, and pest control in Vaughan covers everything else in the city.
Which ant do you have?
Three ants account for nearly every Vaughan call, and they are treated three different ways.
Pavement ants. Small, about 3 mm, dark brown to black. They nest in soil under concrete and paving stones and push little piles of sand up through the joints. Inside, they show up along the garage-to-house door, at basement slab cracks, and in kitchens near the patio door. On warm days in spring you may see two colonies fighting on the driveway, a pile of ants that looks like a dark smear on the concrete.
Odorous house ants. Similar size, brown to black, and they give off a sour, rotten-coconut smell when you crush one. They chase moisture and sweets and often move indoors after heavy rain. Expect them at the dishwasher, under the sink, and around a leaky window.
Carpenter ants. Much bigger, up to about 12 mm, black or black and red. They do not eat wood; they hollow it out to nest, and they prefer wood that is already damp. A trail of large black ants indoors at night, or small piles of coarse sawdust under a window or baseboard, points to them. That is a separate job, covered on our carpenter ant control page.
Why Vaughan's subdivisions get pavement ants
Much of Vaughan's housing is recent: Maple, Vellore Village, Patterson, Thornhill Woods, Sonoma Heights, and the newer streets of Woodbridge. Those lots share a build style that pavement ants love. Poured concrete porches and garage floors. Interlock driveways and backyard patios laid on a bed of sand. Basement floors poured as a slab, with an expansion gap around the edge.
Sand under paving stones is the ideal pavement ant nest: warm, dry, easy to dig, and right against your foundation. A colony under the driveway or the back patio finds its way in through the gap where the garage slab meets the house, along a plumbing penetration in the basement floor, or through a crack in a finished basement's slab under the carpet. In newer builds the ants are often already under the property before the family moves in.
What you will notice:
- Small sand or soil mounds in patio and driveway joints, rebuilt after every rain.
- A trail along the baseboard in the basement or the room off the garage.
- Ants appearing from under a kitchen floor or around the base of a patio door.
- Winged ants indoors in late spring or summer, which means a mature colony is close.
Ants in older Woodbridge and Maple homes, and on the Kleinburg lots
In the older parts of Woodbridge and Maple, mature trees and decades-old decks change the picture. Odorous house ants nest in damp spots in wall voids and under bathroom floors, and carpenter ants move from trees along the Humber valley and the larger Kleinburg lots into wet wood in the house: a deck ledger, a window sill with a failed seal, a soft spot under a leaking skylight.
If the ants are big, black, and showing up at night, start with the carpenter ant page, because that job is about finding the nest in the wood and the moisture behind it. Small ants on the counter are a bait job. Mixing up the two is the most common reason an ant problem keeps coming back.
What Ontario's pesticide rules mean for your driveway and patio
Ontario restricts what can be sprayed outdoors. The province's home lawn and garden pesticide page says that by law, certain pesticides cannot be used to kill weeds and insects on lawns, gardens, patios, or driveways. The same page allows pesticides for indoor pests and pests that can damage the structure of a home.
Ants are a good example of where that line falls. Ontario's guide to pesticide classes explains that a product labelled for use around the outside of a home to keep ants from getting in can be used under the structural exception, but using a product to control ants in the lawn is a cosmetic use and is prohibited.
In practice that shapes the job. We treat ants inside the house and at the foundation and entry points to stop them getting in, using Health Canada-registered products to label. We do not blanket the lawn or the whole driveway. For a colony under the patio, bait the workers carry home does most of the work anyway.
Why the spray from the store keeps failing
A spray kills the ants it touches and leaves the colony under the slab untouched. Pavement ant colonies can hold thousands of workers, and the queen never comes out to the trail. Kill the trail on Saturday and new workers follow the same scent line by Tuesday.
Bait works the other way. Workers pick up a slow-acting bait and carry it home, where it is passed to the queen and the young. It looks slow for a few days, then the trail thins out and stops. Spraying near the bait cuts that off, so if you are using a store spray, stop before we arrive.
What ant extermination costs in Vaughan
Ant control in Vaughan follows the ranges on our York Region cost page. Pavement and odorous house ants run $150 to $300. Carpenter ants run $250 to $500.
| Vaughan ant job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| One trail from a driveway or patio colony | $150 to $250 |
| Several entry points, or ants on more than one floor | $200 to $300 |
| Carpenter ants, nest in or near the structure | $250 to $500 |
A single pavement ant trail at the garage door of a Vellore townhouse sits at the low end. A Woodbridge home with ants in the kitchen, the basement, and the sunroom sits higher. A follow-up check is part of the job, and if ants are still trailing in within two months, the re-treatment is free, once.
How we clear an ant problem
- Free inspection. We identify the species, follow the trail back to the entry point, and look for the nest: under the slab, in a patio joint, in a wall void, or in damp wood.
- Bait matched to the colony. Ants switch between sugar and protein through the season, so we place the bait the colony is actually taking.
- Treatment at the source. Where the nest or entry point is reachable, we treat it directly, at the foundation and in the gaps where ants get in.
- Follow-up. We check the trails and put out fresh bait where a satellite colony is still feeding.
Between visits, fix drips under sinks, keep sugar and pet food sealed, and pull mulch a few inches back from the foundation. Caulking the gap where the garage slab meets the house wall closes one of the most common pavement ant routes in Vaughan homes.
Ants on the counter and a pile of fine sawdust are two different problems. If you see both, tell us when you book so the inspection covers carpenter ants too.
Neighbour issues and property standards in Vaughan
If a neighbouring property is neglected and feeding a pest problem, Vaughan's Property Standards By-law 231-2011 requires yards to be kept free of rodents, vermin, and insect pests. Complaints go to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or through the City of Vaughan's property by-laws page. If you rent, pest control is the landlord's responsibility under Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act. Report it in writing.
Treatments are done by Insectica Pest Control (licensed, insured, BBB A-accredited), with same-day visits and a 24/7 line across Vaughan.
Common questions
What stops ants coming up through my driveway in Vaughan?
Those are almost always pavement ants nesting in the sand under the pavers or concrete. Bait the workers carry back to the colony is what ends it. Spraying the joints only kills the ants on top. Ontario's pesticide rules also limit what can be sprayed on driveways and patios, which is another reason bait is the standard approach.
Why do I have ants in my basement in a newer Vaughan home?
Pavement ants nest under concrete slabs and find their way in through the expansion gap at the edge of the basement floor, around plumbing that comes up through the slab, or through hairline cracks. Newer subdivisions in Maple, Vellore and Thornhill Woods often have colonies under the property before anyone moves in.
Are the ants in my kitchen carpenter ants?
If they are small, about 3 mm, and following a trail to food, they are probably pavement or odorous house ants and a bait job. If they are large, up to about 12 mm, black, active at night, and you have found coarse sawdust, they are likely carpenter ants, which need the nest found in damp wood.
How long does ant extermination take to work?
Expect the trail to keep going for three to five days while workers carry bait home, then thin out. Most Vaughan ant jobs are clear within one to two weeks. A colony with several satellite nests may need a second round of bait.
Can you spray my whole lawn for ants?
No. Ontario's cosmetic pesticide rules prohibit using pesticides to control ants in a lawn. We treat inside the home and at the foundation and entry points, which the rules allow, and use bait for colonies under patios and driveways.
How much does ant control cost in Vaughan?
Pavement and odorous house ant treatment runs $150 to $300, depending on how many entry points and floors are involved. Carpenter ants run $250 to $500. The inspection is free and the quote is in writing before work starts.
