Pest Control in Aurora

Pest control in Aurora is mostly three jobs: carpenter ants in spring on the treed lots, mice from September on, and wasps through the summer, and most Aurora homes land between $200 and $500 for the job. Aurora is one of the most heavily treed towns in York Region, and the big old maples over the historic Yonge and Wellington core, the estate lots in the Hills of St Andrew, and the mature yards through Aurora Highlands and Regency Acres are exactly what carpenter ants want. If it is rodents, start with mice control in Aurora; if it is small ants on the driveway or in the kitchen, see ant control in Aurora below. The work is carried out by Insectica Pest Control, owner-operated, licensed and insured exterminators, and we offer same-day and 24/7 service across Aurora, with a two-month guarantee and one free re-treatment if the pest comes back. Aurora homes, and the pests that come with the trees

Aurora is not a uniform subdivision town, and the pest problems track the housing. There is the heritage core around Yonge and Wellington, where century homes sit under a heavy mature canopy and the wood is old. There are the large treed estate lots in the Hills of St Andrew, backing onto ravine and bush. There are the established 1980s to 2000s subdivisions in Regency Acres and Aurora Highlands, and the newer builds out in Stronach and Bayview Wellington. Each of these draws a different pest, and a company that treats a Stronach new build the same way it treats a Wellington Street heritage home is guessing.

What ties most of Aurora together is the tree cover. Aurora protects its canopy hard, and Sheppard's Bush and the Nokiidaa Trail wrap green right through town. Mature trees mean shade, moisture, and a steady supply of the dead and damaged wood that carpenter ants build in. That is why Aurora, more than the newer subdivision towns south of it, is carpenter ant country.

Carpenter ants on Aurora's treed lots

If you are seeing big black ants in an Aurora home, especially in spring, you almost certainly have carpenter ants, and they are the pest we treat here most. They are the largest ant you will find indoors, quarter-inch and up, and unlike a nuisance ant on the counter, carpenter ants damage the structure. They do not eat wood the way termites do. They hollow it out to nest in, and they go for wood that is already damp or soft: a windowsill that has taken years of condensation, a section of framing near a leaky bathroom, the wood around a chimney flashing, a deck ledger board, or the roots and trunk of one of those big Aurora trees right outside the wall.

Aurora gives them everything they want. The mature trees are the outdoor nest, often a "parent" colony in a dead limb or a stump. From there they run "satellite" nests into the house, which is why you can spray the ants you see and still have the problem. Kill the trail and the parent colony outdoors keeps sending more.

The ants you see indoors are almost never the whole colony. The nest is the job, and the nest is usually a satellite of a bigger colony out in the trees. We find the nest first, then treat it, rather than chasing foragers around a baseboard.

The signs of carpenter ants in an Aurora home:

  • Large black ants indoors, especially in spring, and especially at night when they forage.
  • Winged ants ("swarmers") inside the house, which means a mature nest, not a stray from outside.
  • Coarse sawdust (called frass) in small piles below a baseboard, windowsill, or door frame. It looks like pencil shavings and often has bits of dead ant in it.
  • A faint rustling inside a wall or hollow door on a quiet night, the sound of the colony working the wood.
  • Ant trails running to a tree, deck, woodpile, or the base of an exterior wall.

Our carpenter ant control page walks through how we find and treat the nest. The short version: we trace the trail to the colony, treat the nest directly, and deal with the moisture or wood problem that let them in, because a fresh coat of the same conditions just invites the next colony.

Frass under a windowsill in an older Aurora home is a carpenter ant sign, but it can also be a wood-boring beetle or, in the worst case, a moisture and rot problem that needs more than pest control. If we find rot rather than ants, we tell you straight, because treating bugs will not fix a leak.

Mice, wasps, cluster flies and cockroaches in Aurora

Fall mice. Once the overnight temperatures drop, roughly September through December, field mice look for somewhere warm, and every Aurora home has gaps a mouse can use: brick weep vents, the gap where the gas line enters, a worn garage door sweep. The estate lots and the northern homes backing onto farmland and the Moraine take the heaviest pressure because the mice are already living at the property line. Clearing them means trapping the mice inside and sealing the entry points, not just laying bait. The full Aurora rodent picture, including rats, is on the mice and rodent control in Aurora page.

Wasps and hornets. The big treed Aurora yards, the sheds, the eaves and the deck soffits are prime nest sites through summer. A paper wasp nest under a soffit or a yellowjacket nest in the ground by a patio is a real hazard for a family, and we remove them at the source. See wasp nest removal.

Cluster flies. On the north side of Aurora, the lots adjacent to the Oak Ridges Moraine and open land get cluster flies in fall, when the flies come to the warm south and west walls of the house to overwinter and end up inside the attic and upper rooms. They are a Moraine-edge problem more than a downtown one, and they need a preventive exterior treatment before they move in, not a can of spray after.

German cockroach. This one is concentrated, not town-wide. It shows up in the older apartments around the Yonge and Wellington core and in the food-service kitchens along the strip, where the warmth and the tight harbourage suit it. A German cockroach problem is a treatment-and-monitoring job, and in a rented unit the landlord owns the response under provincial law (see below).

Ant control in Aurora: small ants or carpenter ants?

Ant control in Aurora starts with which ant it is, because the two jobs are priced and treated differently. Small brown or black ants trailing along the driveway, the patio stones or the kitchen counter are usually pavement ants or odorous house ants. They are a nuisance, not a structural problem, and a bait-and-perimeter job for them runs $150 to $300. Large black ants indoors, winged ants in spring, or coarse sawdust under a window sill are carpenter ants, and that job runs $250 to $500 because the work is tracing the trail back to the nest.

Aurora sees both. The newer subdivisions, with their poured driveways and interlock patios, get pavement ants pushing sand up through the joints every summer. The older treed streets near the core and the lots by the Nokiidaa Trail get the carpenter ants. If you are not sure which one you have, a clear photo of one ant next to a coin usually settles it. More on the small ants is on the ant control page.

Cockroach control in Aurora

Cockroach control in Aurora is usually a German cockroach job in an apartment or a restaurant kitchen, not a house job. German cockroaches need warmth and steady food, so in Aurora they turn up in the older rental buildings and the food-service kitchens around Yonge Street, and they spread through shared walls and plumbing. That work is gel bait and crack-and-void treatment over two to three visits, and it runs $200 to $600 depending on the size of the unit and how established they are. See German cockroach pest control for how the visits are spaced.

The detached homes on Aurora's treed lots have a different visitor. A single large, dark brown cockroach on the floor in late spring or summer is often a wood cockroach that wandered in from a woodpile, the leaf litter or a dead tree. Wood cockroaches live outdoors and do not set up colonies inside a house, so one of them is a sealing and firewood-storage question, not a treatment. If you are seeing small, light brown roaches in the kitchen at night, that is the German cockroach, and it is worth a call.

The Aurora neighbourhoods we cover

We cover all of Aurora, and the pest tends to follow the pocket:

  • Historic core (Yonge and Wellington): heritage homes, heavy mature canopy, old wood. Carpenter ants and, in the older apartments, cockroaches.
  • Hills of St Andrew: large treed estate lots backing onto bush and ravine. Carpenter ants, wasps, and mice off the tree line.
  • Aurora Highlands and Regency Acres: established subdivisions with grown-in yards. Fall mice, carpenter ants in the older trees, summer wasps.
  • Bayview Wellington and Stronach: newer builds and subdivisions. Fall mice at the field edge and wasps in the young yards.
  • Aurora Village: a mix of housing near the core, the full range depending on the age of the home.
  • North lots along the Moraine: cluster flies, mice, and the odd rural pest off the open land and Sheppard's Bush.

If your street is not named here, we still cover it. Aurora is a small enough town that we know it.

Who is responsible: the bylaw, the health unit, and renters

If you own your Aurora home, keeping it free of pests is on you, and the Town of Aurora's property-standards bylaw is the reason: it requires properties to be kept free of rodents, vermin and pest infestation, and the town's bylaw services can enforce it. You can find the town's information at aurora.ca. The regional health authority for Aurora is York Region Public Health, not any Toronto body, and its details are at york.ca.

If you rent in Aurora, the pest problem is almost always the landlord's to fix. Under Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act, a landlord must keep a rental in a good state of repair and fit for habitation, and that includes dealing with pests like cockroaches or mice. A tenant who cannot get the landlord to act can take it to the Landlord and Tenant Board. Tell your landlord in writing first, keep a copy, and if they arrange treatment, cooperate with access and any prep the tech asks for, because a unit that is not prepped is a treatment that fails.

The products we use are registered with Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency, and we follow the label, which is what keeps a treatment safe around a family and pets.

What it costs in Aurora

Most Aurora pest jobs land between $200 and $500 for a home, depending on the pest, the size of the property, and how far it has spread. A single carpenter ant nest caught early is at the lower end; a large treed estate lot in the Hills of St Andrew with a parent colony outdoors and satellite nests in the house is more work and lands higher. A fall mouse job with entry sealing on a big two-storey costs more than a condo with one entry point. We quote after a free inspection, with no upsell and no surprise, and the full cost breakdown for York Region shows the ranges by pest.

How we work

  1. Free inspection. We find the nest or the entry points and confirm the pest, inside and out. For carpenter ants that means tracing the trail to the colony, which is the step that decides whether the problem comes back.
  2. Targeted treatment. We treat the nest or the runs directly with Health Canada-registered products, placed where they reach the colony and stay away from your family and pets.
  3. Fix the cause. For ants that means the moisture or wood problem; for mice it means sealing the gaps. Treating without fixing the cause is a temporary result.
  4. Follow-up and guarantee. We come back to confirm the activity has stopped. If the pest is still active within two months, we return once at no charge.

The work is carried out by Insectica Pest Control, owner-operated and not a franchise, BBB A-accredited, and licensed and insured as a matter of policy, and we answer the phone 24/7 for same-day service across Aurora.

Common questions

Why does Aurora have so many carpenter ants?

The tree cover. Aurora protects a heavy mature canopy, and those big old trees are where carpenter ant colonies live outdoors. From a parent nest in a dead limb or stump, satellite nests move into nearby homes, especially where there is damp or damaged wood. The more mature trees around a house, the higher the pressure, which is why the historic core and the estate lots see the most.

I killed the ants I saw but they came back. Why?

Because the ants you see are foragers, not the colony. The nest, often a satellite of a bigger colony out in your trees, keeps sending more. Spraying the trail does not touch it. The fix is to find and treat the nest and deal with the wood or moisture that drew them, which is what our carpenter ant treatment does.

Do carpenter ants damage an Aurora home like termites?

They are slower and less destructive than termites, but left alone for years in an older Aurora home they can weaken framing, sills and trim, because they hollow out wood to nest in. Caught early it is a straightforward treatment. That is the argument for calling on the first spring sighting rather than waiting.

My rental unit in Aurora has mice. Whose job is it to fix?

Your landlord's, in almost every case. Ontario's Residential Tenancies Act requires a landlord to keep a rental fit to live in and free of pests. Tell them in writing, keep a copy, and if they will not act you can go to the Landlord and Tenant Board. When they arrange treatment, give the tech access and do the prep they ask for.

How much does cockroach control cost in Aurora?

Most Aurora cockroach jobs run $200 to $600. A German cockroach problem in an apartment caught early sits at the low end; an established infestation in a larger kitchen needs more visits and lands higher. A lone wood cockroach in a treed detached home usually needs no treatment at all.

What is the difference between ant control and carpenter ant control in Aurora?

Small pavement ants and odorous house ants are a nuisance and a $150 to $300 bait-and-perimeter job. Carpenter ants nest in damp wood, so the work is finding the nest and the moisture, and it runs $250 to $500. Big black ants indoors in spring usually means carpenter ants.

Do I need to leave home during a treatment?

Usually not. For most carpenter ant, mouse and wasp work you can stay. If we apply a product that needs an area kept clear, we tell you exactly which room and for how long, following the label. Nothing about our standard work requires you to move out.

When should I call about carpenter ants versus wait?

Call as soon as you see large black ants indoors in spring, winged ants inside, or piles of coarse sawdust under a sill or baseboard. Those mean an established nest, not a stray. Early is cheaper and does less damage than a colony that has worked the wood for a couple of seasons.

Does the guarantee cover me if the pest comes back?

Yes. Our work carries a two-month guarantee, and if the pest is still active in that window we come back once at no charge. There is no upsell attached to it.
